Tony Moore, the original artist to collaborate with writer Robert Kirkman on the hit comic book series turned multi-media hit The Walking Dead, filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court yesterday against his co-creator. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Moore’s suit claims Kirkman cheated him of his share in the rights to the material they created together, hasn’t properly compensated him and hasn’t allowed him access to financial data. According to the magazine, Moore’s suit states that Kirkman and Moore were “joint authors and co-owners of the copyrights” of Walking Dead and their other collaborations, but Moore claims that “he was told in 2005 by Kirkman that a big TV deal was on the table but Kirkman would not be able to complete the deal unless [Moore] assigned all of his interest in the Walking Dead and other works to Kikman,” and that this was part of “a scheme to fraudulently induce him to assign his copyright interests over to Kirkman’s company.” Moore’s suit alleges causes of action for promissory fraud, breach of written contract and breach of implied covenant of good faith and fair dealing, among other charges. Kirkman’s attorney told The Hollywood Reporter that the case was “totally frivolous,” but that they’re taking it very seriously. Publisher Image Comics debuted The Walking Dead monthly comic book series in 2003. Moore drew the interiors for the first seven issues, after which artist Charlie Adlard assumed the interior art duties, while Moore continued drawing covers. He continued to do through 2005′s issue #24. The book is currently up to issue #94, and has performed remarkably well in collected editions, and has been so popular that Image has been publishing weekly reprints of single issues to help new fans catch up with the series. While Walking Dead proved their most successful co-creation, it was only Kirkman and Moore’s latest of several collaborations, including Battle Pope in 2000 and Brit in 2003. In 2010, AMC debuted the television series based on the comic, which Hollywood Reporter says “has become basic cable’s highest-rated series, drawing as many as 7.3 million viewers.” The series is currently in its second season. Kirkman serves as an executive producer. [Via The Comic Alliance ]

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles may be even better known to the contemporary public than the Renaissance artists they were named after (save perhaps Leonardo da Vinci, who’s now forever associated with Tom Hanks). Co-creator Kevin Eastman has never lost love for his most famous creations. On the eve of a comic-book and TV relaunch for the lean, green martial-arts machines, Eastman spoke to GCD about his own Turtle Power and his return to co-writing the comics again. Check out our TMNT Image Gallery for some exclusive pages from the new book, as well as a look at the Comic-Con 2011 Ashcan preview. GeekChicDaily: We had heard that a few years back Peter Laird bought out your share of the creator rights. Clearly, that has changed. What had to happen there before this latest project could move forward? Kevin Eastman: Here, let me explain the steps to be clear, as it can seem a little complicated at times… In the late 1990′s when there wasn’t a lot of TMNT licensing or entertainment work going on, I was jumping into the new Heavy Metal film, as well as several other projects in Hollywood. Around that time Peter and I had had a series of conversations about the future, and what we’d each like to be doing; we agreed that we should pursue those dreams, and to do so I would sell him creative control of the entire TMNT property and related companies. This was how it was managed for roughly the next eight years, at which time we further agreed he would buy out my remaining interest and did, until he sold them to Viacom a few years later. Then, as Viacom set up the TMNT franchise within their different groups, they decided the Nickelodeon group would license out the comic book rights to a top industry publisher and wisely selected IDW Publishing. I have been a longtime friend and fan of IDW, so when they secured the rights and called to ask me if I wanted to come and play with the Turtles again I jumped at the chance. It has been more than fifteen years since I did TMNT comic work and I found myself completely pumped to see what I could add to their already awesome creative team. GCD: Last time we wrote about you, you were auctioning off your personal Turtles merchandise collection. How did that go and who ended up buying? How did it feel unloading all of that – cathartic, sad, maybe both? KE: Neither. The auction never reached the reserve, so I still have it all. It was an interesting experiment in those emotions, though. I have collected and have owned so much stuff in my life – to the point of hoarding at times – but over the past several years I have either sold or given away a pretty big chunk of it. Which I felt great about, but now that it is still here, I have a new plan and will share that with you shortly. GCD: As we...

Apparently Jim Henson wrote about more than Muppets and Children’s stories. Read the article below about a lost screenplay coming out as a Graphic Novel by Jim Henson. ———————– Article: The Jim Henson Movie You’ve Never Seen A long-lost screenplay is revived as a graphic novel: enter “Sand,” man. We say: Jim Henson. What do you think of first: wise-cracking, fuzzy puppets? Or dystopian drama? Hardcore Henson-heads know that the man behind the Muppets had more on his mind than teaching kids that C is for cookie or that being green was, in fact, not easy. Did you know that Fraggle Rock was created to inspire world peace by showing how vastly different races could live in harmony? Or that prior to Sesame Street, Henson’s film-making was hugely influenced by Philip K. Dick? Henson was Oscar-nominated for his 1965 short “Time Piece,” a wacky stream-of-consciousness film about how the mind works while time is passing us by. In 1968, he and collaborator Jerry Juhl wrote a screenplay for a similarly themed feature called A Tale of Sand. It was buried in the vaults and lay hidden like the Lost Ark until now. You won’t see it on the big screen just yet, but Archaia Comics will publish A Tale of Sand in graphic-novel form this fall, with art by Ramon Perez. The story follows an everyman who wakes up in a strange southwestern town and is chased across the desert by unusual pursuers. Not enough puppets for ya? Archaia’s also working on Labyrinth and Dark Crystal prequel comics with original designer Brian Froud. If that doesn’t inspire world peace among the faithful fan-base, nothing will.
Just one day after Warner Bros. revealed the very first picture of Henry Cavill as Superman in Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, they’ve given us another treat with the first official photo of Anne Hathaway as Selina Kyle from Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Yesterday, a number of less official photos leaked from the set in Pittsburgh, so Warner Bros. proactively made sure that a better official picture of Hathaway’s character turned up unannounced on the official site TheDarkKnightRises.com, and it looks like the spandex-clad thief has stolen Batman’s Batpod! Mind you, the site clearly refers to her as “Selina Kyle” rather than directly as “Catwoman,” which may be somewhat telling that like “Harvey Two-Face,” Nolan is going for a more realistic approach to the character. Source: SuperHeroHype

Ain’t it Cool News is reporting the following: Deadline is reporting tonight that Javier Bardem is closing on a deal for him to play Roland Deschain, the Last Gunslinger, in THE DARK TOWER trilogy, as well as be in the television show that will run between the films. I think this might be a first in a large-scale production like this – a television series that runs between each film release, with the series between films 2 and 3 being a prequel. I’d imagine that part of the TV series would cover the events of WIZARD AND GLASS, and since the characters in that are younger, I don’t think they would be casting Bardem for Roland in that except in brief moments. According to the article, the deal isn’t finalized yet, but it’s close, close enough for Ron Howard to be looking at other actors to play Jake, Eddie, and Susannah, as well as the Man in Black and the various other characters. Bardem’s a good choice – there’s a real nobility and a sense of gravitas about him, but as we’ve seen in NO COUNTRY FOR OLD MEN he can play someone who is prone to violence at a moment’s notice. I’m not sure that this kind of adaptation would be able to get the entire scope of Stephen King’s saga, but that may be a blessing. I think this may be a case, as in LORD OF THE RINGS, that a completely loyal adaptation of the story may not be in order. Now with the major casting hurdle out of the way, Howard can concentrate on the other actors to fill out the rest of the cast. But it looks like THE DARK TOWER saga is indeed coming to screens both large and small.
